Medicine Horse Center is an equine assisted therapy and social emotional learning center located in Mancos, Colorado. Through experiential, therapeutic, and alternative outdoor education activities, we strive to support and strengthen the social, emotional, and mental health of our local community.

Who We Are

Located in Mancos, Colorado, Medicine Horse Center has been serving the community since 2000. We believe in the power of awareness and relationships to enhance the quality of life. All programs are led by a licensed therapist, who guides the clients as they explore their emotions, behaviors, and thought patterns that are creating difficulty in their lives. Through interacting with horses, clients become aware of the impact they have on others, and find a safe, non-judgemental place to practice being fully present, grounded, and in control of responses. Clients find a sense of insight and empowerment as they form trusting relationships with the horses, which can then be transferred to other areas of their lives.

Our Values

We seek to provide a safe, guided, and inclusive environment for our clients to explore their emotions and gain insight into themselves. By emphasizing the transformative power of self-awareness, respectful connection, and compassion, we support clients in developing confidence and resilience throughout their lives.

Our Philosophy

At Medicine Horse Center, we recognize the value and dignity of each of our clients. Using a strength-based framework in our sessions, we meet clients where they are at to address the impacts of trauma, emotions, and the unique needs of each individual. Our sessions are grounded in the belief that all of us - clients, facilitators and horses - deserve non judgmental respect, creating an environment for growth, healing, and positive change.

Who horses? How it works

Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP) is an alternative form of therapy that helps clients build awareness of their emotions, actions, and mindset through interacting with horses. Horses are highly perceptive and responsive animals that react honestly to those in their environment. As a result, horses help our clients understand the impact of their emotions and actions, and practice skills to build trusting, compassionate relationships with the horses. Through these interactions, clients develop an understanding of others, improve self esteem, and gain confidence, skills that can be transferred to other parts of their lives.

Equine-assisted learning has been proven to be an effective tool to:

  • Increase self-confidence
  • Develop emotional regulation and impulse control
  • Improve verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • Build trust
  • Improve social skills
  • Enhance teamwork
